This Friday, I will be meeting my favourite author. She's coming to CANADA.... Western.... Alberta.... Edmonton!!! Patti Digh writes these wonderful books that are full of wisdom, laughter and pretty pictures!!! Her books have accompanied me through various rooms, in my house (yes! even the bathroom!), and have gotten me through a growth on my spine, the surgery, the long recovery and, now, its regrowth. From her words, I have howled out loud with laughter and cried a kleenex full. What also makes her books special is that she asks artists (professional and dabblers), from around the world, to illustrate her books. About a month ago, I wrote on my FaceBook page, " Need your advice....I have the opportunity to hear (& possibly meet) my favorite author, Patti Digh. She is a keynote speaker at a conference in Edmonton. In order for me to see/listen her at this conference, I have to pay $150.00 for a 'conference day pass.' Money is tight, as i am scheduled for the Fine Arts Conference (over $600.00 for the following week and I am part time ), and I'm not interested in any of the sessions...I just want to see/listen to her. Should I go? — with Patti Digh. I was expecting my friends to respond, and they did, AFTER Patti herself responded!! She was the first to respond and she wrote, "How about we just grab a cup of coffee instead!" Ahhhhhh, YES!!!!! (If you are interested in seeing more of Patti's books, click here!) Here are some videos to give you an idea about who Patti is, and how special her books are..... Thanks to Ms. Cielen (Science/Math teacher at EPC!)... I figured out how to create a QR Code for this website!!! So, now, one can take their cell phone, scan this code in, and "Viola!!!," one is taken to Ms. Burns' EPC Art Page! Just remember the password! Very cool!!! I'll test it out tomorrow....in class.
"Okay students, take out your cell phones...." This is unbelievable. A former EPC Art student, Shawn Amero (now a welder!), shared this page with me the other day. I can imagine the hours and hours of meticulous work.... this is brilliant!
"Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. Dettmer is originally from Chicago, where he studied at Columbia College. He currently lives and works in Atlanta, GA. " (quote from featured web page...see link below!) This artist, Brian Dettmer, uses old books and creates art with them. <<<<<Have a look at this page.... Check out this site sent my way by Ms. Cielen (Junior High Math and Science teacher!)! Simple and effective....and you get to draw with your mouse...and see wh!!! So... now go Draw a Stickman!!!
When you come back to school, you usually get the question, "So, what did you do for your summer vacation?" And if you are in English class, usually you have to write a paragraph about it! So...it seems only fair, that I share with you what I did! Besides sleep, visit family and soak up some sun (with sunscreen of course!), I created a webpage that features my work as an artist, teacher, writer and photographer. It was interesting doing something creative in a completely different way!! There was a steep learning curve, but I did it! Granted not all of my work is there, but you will get an idea of the variety of things I like to muddle with! Meander over and see what I did.... I hope you like it! http://www.barbaraburns.ca So....now it is your turn...... what did you do for your summer vacation? |
AuthorHere are a few things that crossed my path and I (Ms. Barbara Burns) thought,"Hmmm, this is kinda neat! I think I will share it with my students". Archives
