EPC "Legacy of Art"
E.P.C. Teenagers Giving Back and the Unusual Donation
How often do you hear great stories about teenagers giving back and brightening the lives of others? AND unusual donations!?!?
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Athabasca's Edwin Parr High School Art students, past and present, have created and given art work to add color and beauty to the world around them.
Some have painted chairs, walls and furniture to leave a part of them in the school. While others have created work that has hung in a long term care facility, hospital lab, the town's theatre and library. These works have been called 'The Legacy of Art.'
Ms. Barbara Burns, the EPC Art teacher, has encouraged her students to create art to brighten other's lives. She has initiated various project creations, for her students. Creations have been sent to the Stollery Children's Hospital and used for AADAC and Family and Community Support Services. Just recently, work has been created for children who have been affected by the HIV virus in Thailand.
UNUSUAL DONATION
Now, using 'The Legacy of Art' work, she is targeting the Hospital's walls, in Athabasca, in hopes to add beauty and warmth. Athabasca Healthcare Centre (the Hospital), which serves approximately 15,000 Albertans, has bare walls. Ms. Burns' idea of adding professionally framed student artwork, to the Hospital's walls, has been warmly received by local Doctors, students and community members. She wanted to use the student collection to enhance the beauty and warmth of the Hospital's ways. Ms. Burns saw this as a wonderful way for students, past and present, to be part of the community and making it a warmer place to live, grow and heal in. So, she approached Mary Proskie (the Hospital's Director) if she would be interested in a permanent exhibition (donation!) on the Hospital's walls. The answer was 'Yes!'
HELP IS NEEDED
Over the past 15 years, countless works have been framed but over 30 remain frameless. Ms. Burns held a special event to raise awareness and funds for this special donation to the Hospital's walls. This past May (2012), 'The Legacy of Art' work was exhibited at The Red Roof Gallery, in Athabasca. The show was well received and over $1,500 was raised to professionally frame the students' work. The viewers of the show picked their 5 favourite pieces, and out of the $1,500, three works will be framed. (Framing is expensive....).
Support is still needed in framing the remaining works. Please help students give back to their community. Let's add color, beauty and warmth to the Athabasca Healthcare Centre. so, if you buy your groceries at Buy-Low, in Athabasca, please purchase Buy-Low bucks and ear mark them for "Art" or "Art Framing."
